Are we at a turning point for the US military? I think so. A few years back, I wrote a paper for an Army War College course in which I asserted that by 2010 the combined actice duty strength of the US Military would be in the 400,000 thousand range. It is currently around 1.3 million. My premise was that by 2010 we would only be able to equip, train and pay 400,000 people as fulltime warfighters and that technology advances would make each fighter as lethal as a 20th Century platoon. Since I wrote my paper, we have seen thousands of military jobs shifted to contractors and advancements in smart munitions have increased the lethality of weapons platforms and the warfighters much more lethal than even five years ago. Are we seeing the end of massed force warfare? Has JFK's vision of Special Operations coming to pass.
In the next few weeks, I will write my thoughts on the future of the military.
